• Treatment of sepsis, bacteremia, peritonitis, brain abscess, necrotizing pneumonia, osteomyelitis, puerperal sepsis, pelvic abscess, pelvic cellulitis and postoperative wound infections from which pathogenic anaerobes have been isolated.
• Urogenital trichomoniasis in women (trichomonal vaginitis) and men.
• Bacterial vaginosis (also known as nonspecific vaginitis, anaerobic vaginosis or Gardnerella vaginitis).
• All forms of amoebiasis (intestinal and extraintestinal disease and that of asymptomatic cysts).
• Giardiasis.
• Acute ulcerative gingivitis.
• Leg ulcers and pressure ulcers infected with anaerobic bacteria.

Dosage & Administration:

Adults: 400 mg every 8 hours for 24 hours immediately before surgery, followed by postoperative intravenous infusion. Or as directed by a physician.

Precautions:

The clinical significance of this is not known at present. In patients undergoing haemodialysis metronidazole and metabolites are efficiently removed during an eight hour period of dialysis. Patients should be warned that metronidazole may darken urine.
